Persecuted Nepali Christians Protest Human Rights Issue

Nepali Christians for decades have humbly persevered through persecution. But now they have been pushed to the edge. The government has taken away their rights to bury their own dead, and it has become so contentious that Hindu extremists have at times dug up their dead and thrown them into the roads, forcing Christians to have to even re-bury their loved ones in the secret of the night. This has gone too far.  Now Nepali Christians are peacefully protesting.

As of April 7, 2011 a group of Nepali Christians has been fasting, praying, and worshiping in Kathmandu for 16 days to get the attention of the government of Nepal.  Ashley Denton (www.ciym.org) and Daniel Treat (www.artformissions.org) were in Nepal working to encourage and equip indigenous young leaders in Pokhara and Kathmandu and were able to capture this raw video footage. Will you pray that the government will show basic human dignity and respect the rights of Christians to bury their own dead.  This issue may seem foreign to those of us in the West, but it is absolutely crucial for Christians living in this mostly Hindu society. If governments can go this far to humiliate people and ignore their basic rights, then how far will they go if they are not held accountable for this? A Unique Appeal

By Patrick Crossland
The desk from where I type these blogs is often covered with stacks of books. I cull through them, making notes in the margins, highlighting pithy quotes, while jotting ideas on scraps of paper like ingredients in a recipe.

As I delve into encyclopedias, biographies, commentaries and the like, I am seldom so gripped by a book as I was by Francis E. Clark’s, Christ and the Young People. Continue reading

Case Studies: The Thinker’s Treadmill

By Patrick Crossland

Case studies are like art models in that they require a participant to study a situation, examine the angles, and form an idea based on the information at hand. A good case study not only challenges an individual to use their noggin, but also encourages group discussion. Continue reading

Stairway to Street Life

By Patrick Crossland

When I was working as a crime reporter, I was told by police that very rarely do people arbitrarily rob banks. Instead, the progression from everyday citizen to bank robber happens in a series of steps, subtle at first, and becoming more drastic with time.

Sadly, there is a similar progression in the lives of children who become homeless. While the factors contributing to child homelessness are varied, often their stories have similar themes: a troubled or disrupted family life immersed in a culture of poverty, and impacted by a social change or migration often results in homelessness. Interview with Patrick McDonald

By Patrick Crossland

Patrick McDonald had what he calls a very unusual experience in a park in Bolivia when he was seventeen. With a one-way ticket he had purchased from his home in England, he sat on a small wall in the park crying out to God, trying to better understand God’s plan for the lost and hurting children like those he was surrounded with in Bolivia. Why Did so much of Christ’s Teaching Occur in the Outdoors

One of the timeless aspects of Jesus Christ’s teaching style was his emphasis on experiential learning.  So much of his teaching occurred in the context of adventure and the outdoors that it begs the question, “Why did he prefer the outdoors as his primary classroom for teaching?”  If you would like to know more about this ancient apprenticing technique of Jesus Christ and how it relates to youth work around the world today, consider reading Dr. Ashley Denton’s book, Christian Outdoor Leadership:  Theology, Theory, and Practice.  Click here to read more and get a sneak peek into one of the excerpts of this book…

Acts 4:13 | En-Couragement for Youthworkers

by Ashley Denton

One of the greatest needs I see regularly among youth workers all over the world is a need for encouragement.  Many youth workers think, “We are young, we are unschooled, we don’t have the credibility that older Christians in our community have….  We need more support from our elders in order to really reach kids in our community.”  Unfortunately this lack of confidence causes a lot of youth workers to wait around until someone gives them the green light to start pursuing lost young people in the community.  I’ve been so encouraged to observe over the past six years a small group of Nepali youth workers who are bucking this trend.  They have stepped out courageously into the streets of Pokhara, Nepal and they are seeing many young people come to Jesus Christ with an incredible thirst to know Him!
